Impacts of Forced Marriages

Forced marriages is a major problem in our community especially girls who are in secondary schools.  A certain family had a girl child who was 16 years of age and they forced her to get married to a rich man who came to propose her for marriage.

But when the girl heard the story she refused but her parents threatened her that if she will not accept the proposal then she had to leave her parents' house.

Scared of her parents, she accepted the man and started living as husband and wife. After four months in the marriage, the girl got pregnant and the man started ill-treating her to the point of physically beating her for no reason.

On the ninth month of her pregnancy, she went to the hospital for delivery but unfortunately the girl's reproductive parts were damaged because her body was not mature enough to give birth and due to this she miscarried.

Upon hearing the news, organizations went to the girl’s parents to probe the issue and it was found to be true and they blamed it on poverty. The issue was reported to police and they charged the man 15 years in prison and the parents were charged K100, 000.
