Lisumbwi Secondary School students were arrested on 23rd
January 2018. This happened because some students were suspected of being ring
leaders and were asked to pay a sum of money to repair for school properties which
were vandalized.
As l went around probing the issue, l found a student who
said l should not mention his name explained that this happened because of the
demonstration and he also added that the other reason was because the students
wanted to burn the school.
When l asked my source for clarification, he said that these
students were planning to burn the dining hall or the administration so that
the money which they wanted to replace for the damaged materials fix this problem,
so they decided to contribute a sum of K300 each and bought 12 liters of petrol.
In addition, they planned to use the same method that was
used to burn the library in 2014.
But when some students heard about this they immediately
reported to the head teacher. The head teacher then informed the police.
After that some students were arrested, some suspended and
some expelled. All the prefects were given punishments and dismissed from their
duties. Then I interviewed the deputy head teacher and he said that the same
information that was given by the students.
He also added that the students were lucky that this happened
because some of them would have find difficulties in finding new schools to
learn while the teachers would be looking for new jobs and he said that he
would make sure that this will not take place again.
